What is the Arlo Smoke and CO Alarm Detection feature and how do I set it up?

Last updated: 08.01.2025

Smoke/CO Alarm Detection uses the Arlo Secure App to notify you when an Arlo camera hears a smoke and/or carbon monoxide (CO) detector alarm. Rich notifications allow you to see alerts from your lock screen that include images of what your camera recorded. You can view the clip that generated the alarm notification in the Arlo Secure App.

Alarm Detection can be enabled when you have an Arlo subscription. For more information about Arlo subscription plans, visit: What are the available Arlo subscription plans and how much cloud recording is available?

Alarm Compatibility

The Alarm Detection feature recognizes smoke detectors with industry-standard T3 alarms (three intermittent beeps, followed by a period of silence) and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors with industry-standard T4 alarms (four intermittent beeps, followed by a period of silence). The Alarm Detection feature does not detect alarms with other patterns or non-standard T3 or T4 patterns. Refer to the instruction manual or other documentation that came with your alarm to confirm that it emits an industry-standard T3 or T4 pattern.
Alarm Detection can be enabled on more than one camera, but the Arlo cameras must be within range of your alarm, and the alarm must emit an industry-standard T3 or T4 alarm pattern.

Camera Placement for Alarm Detection Test

Place the Arlo camera two feet or less from your smoke or CO alarm to test if it is compatible with Arlo Alarm Detection. For more information, visit: How do I test my Arlo device with my smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?
When you determine where to place your Arlo camera, aim the camera toward the area of highest interest.
Your camera might not detect an alarm in the following situations:

  • Your Arlo camera is too far from your alarm
  • Your alarm does not emit a T3 or T4 alarm pattern
  • Multiple, overlapping alarms occur at the same time
  • Echoes occur in the room
  • Another noise is equal to or louder than the alarm
