How do I optimize motion detection for my Arlo camera?

Last updated: 08.01.2025

To optimize Arlo camera motion detection, check the camera position, signal strength, and motion detection sensitivity.

Camera Position

Mount your Arlo camera at least 7 feet (2 meters) above the floor or ground, angle it slightly downward, and place it within 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) of where motion is expected.

Make sure side-to-side traffic crosses the camera field of view. The camera motion sensor is more sensitive to side-to-side movement across its field of view than to movement directly toward or away from the camera. The best area for motion detection is 5 to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 meters) from the camera position.

Camera Signal Strength

If an Arlo camera signal to the Arlo SmartHub, Base Station, or Wi-Fi router is weak, recording delays might occur when motion is detected.

To check the signal strength:

  1. Launch the Arlo Secure App.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. The signal strength will appear on the bottom of the device card for your camera.

To increase signal strength:

  • Move your cameras away from devices such as cordless phone bases, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.
  • Do not place your Arlo system too close to other Wi-Fi devices.
  • Ensure your camera is at least 6 feet (2 meters) from the Arlo SmartHub, Base Station, or Wi-Fi router.
    • Placing devices too close together may cause interference issues.
  • Position your Arlo SmartHub or Base Station so that it is central to all Arlo cameras and not exceeding a distance of 300 feet apart.

Note: The maximum line-of-sight range of 300 feet is reduced by each wall, ceiling, or other large obstruction between the Arlo camera and Arlo SmartHub or Base Station. The following materials reduce signal strength the most:

  • Unusually thick walls and ceilings
  • Brick
  • Concrete
  • Stone
  • Ceramic
  • Glass, especially mirrors
  • Metal
  • Large quantities of water, such as the water in a fish tank or water heater

Motion Detection Sensitivity

If the Motion Detection Sensitivity is set too low, motion may not trigger recordings.

Cross-triggering Cameras

If you still experience motion detection issues, consider cross-triggering. With cross-triggering, you can create a Rule that triggers a recording on one camera when a different camera detects motion. For example, you can configure the camera at your front door to record a 60-second video when the camera in your garage detects motion.

Mobile Network Connection (Arlo Go and Arlo Go 2)

If an Arlo Go connection to the mobile network is weak, recording delays might occur when motion is detected. If your Arlo Go series camera regularly has fewer than three bars of mobile signal strength, move your camera to a location with better signal strength.
